• Nasdaq Foundation funds investor education initiative
  The Nasdaq Foundation has awarded Consumer Action a grant to fund an investment literacy and engagement project geared to women and BIPOC consumers.
• Experian funds financial capability/credit education initiative with DEI lens
  Experian has made a commitment to Consumer Action for a multi-state financial capability and credit education initiative with a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) lens.

  In June, Audrey Perrott attended a presentation on Debt: When It Helps, When It Hurts, What It Could Do to Build Household Wealth.
• Consumer Action participates in virtual state resource fair
  In April, during National Financial Capability Month, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) put on its annual resource fair. This year's fair was presented in webinar format and highlighted several exhibitors and resources promoting consumer financial empowerment and security. The webinar offered participants practical tools to better manage their money, tips for saving for the future, and—this is where Consumer Action came in—tips for safeguarding personal and financial information.
• PG&E funds Consumer Action to address energy poverty
  Consumer Action was among a dozen or so nonprofits selected to receive a grant from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E).
• Using FinTech and coaching to improve financial wellness
  Consumer Action launched two financial health and technology programs in 2020 and 2021 with support from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, Desert Credit Union and Capital One.
• Discussing social media harms and kids’ online safety
  In late April, we heard a panel of engaging speakers—including Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen and California legislators Nancy Skinner and Jesse Gabriel—at the Center for California Studies at Cal State Sacramento.

  Consumer Action and Consumer Federation of America (CFA) recently created a consumer guide for Californians about their California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) rights and how to exercise them.

• Consumer Action works to close the racial gap
  With support from Wells Fargo and Capital One, Consumer Action is scaling its financial technology (FinTech) innovation and education initiatives to directly address the racial wealth gap and improve financial health for consumers of color, as well as for low- and moderate-income (LMI) and other underrepresented consumers. The project will include a matching component to encourage participating consumers to build or rebuild savings and gain momentum.
• Presenting to a live group after months of pandemic distancing
  After nearly two years of conducting only virtual trainings and presentations due to the pandemic, Consumer Action’s Outreach staff has been eager for the day they could add in-person events back into their calendar.
• Spread the word: Nonprofits needed for financial health measurement study
  Attune, a developer of tools that enable businesses and organizations to gather and analyze automated financial health data, is offering one or two nonprofits the opportunity to test its financial health measurement platform.
• Helping people to manage medical expenses and debt
  Consumer Action teamed up with the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) at Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland, to discuss medical debt—how it starts, strategies to manage medical expenses, and programs that help pay medical bills.

  Consumer Action teamed up with the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) at Maryland’s Prince George's Community College to discuss federal stimulus packages and pandemic-related consumer protections.

• Funder brings Consumer Action’s FinTech education to Arizona
  In September, the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco awarded $3.5 million in grants to 97 nonprofits through its 2020 Access to Housing and Economic Assistance for Development (AHEAD) program. The grants, delivered by FHLBank San Francisco member financial institutions to nonprofits in Arizona, California and Nevada, are aimed at providing both immediate and long-term pandemic relief and boosting economic development in lower-income communities.
• Financial health measurement: A barometer of consumer finances
  In August, Consumer Action’s Audrey Perrott shared insights into Consumer Action’s financial health measurement journey using the Financial Health Network’s FinHealth Score® Toolkit at the Financial Health Network’s “Orienting Around Financial Health” virtual meeting.

  Consumer Action’s director of strategic partnerships, facilitated a webinar and served as a virtual mentor to educate the current First Founder’s Accelerator cohort about financial health, financial technology and privacy rights.

  Nine community organizations that attended MoneyWi$e trainings in Texas and Louisiana or used MoneyWi$e materials in their communities have been awarded mini-grants by Consumer Action and Capital One to support financial empowerment in diverse communities. MoneyWi$e curricula includes: brochures, leader's guides, lesson plans and power point slides. MoneyWi$e was developed by Consumer Action in partnership with Capital One.

The Second Phase ran from Oct. 25. 2010-April 15, 2011. MoneyWi$e is a financial literacy partnership of Consumer Action and Capital One Financial Corporation.

  Consumer Action was invited to speak at the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) staff meeting in Nashville, TN in October about our financial empowerment initiatives, consumer education materials and training for community-based organizations.

  This MoneyWi$e Financial Literacy Outreach & Education Report is based on final mini-grants and bi-monthly reports and applications submitted to Consumer Action by community-based agencies receiving mini-grants (stipends) during the first round of the 2010 Moneywi$e Financial Literacy Outreach & Education Stipend Program. The first phase of the stipend program ran during the five months ending December 31, 2010. MoneyWi$e is a financial literacy partnership of Consumer Action and Capital One Financial Corporation.
